Lecture 5: computer metaphor in cogniive psychology. Computer-based language seemed to be a more precise way of talking about the mind: invesigators were searching for a theoreical alternaive piaget, components of the informaion processing architecture of the mind can be ideniied: Sensory, short-term and long-term: processing characterisics can also be ideniied: Limited vs. unlimited capacity, parallel vs. serial processing: cogniive performance = low of informaion through a processing system, problems with computer metaphor. Cogniive development is about changes in cogniive processing over ime. Novice vs. expert: development is both domain-speciic and domain-general. General capabiliies: development is associated with increased ability to inhibit irrelevant informaion. Classic informaion processing experiment: sperling"s sensory memory task. Parial report task: briely presented a 3x4 leter display but had paricipants report just one row of the matrix. Paricipants did not know which row to report unil a tone was presented: parial report task allows informaion available to be esimated.
