PSYC 3330 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Parahippocampal Gyrus, Extrastriate Body Area, Fusiform Face Area
Document Summary
Semantic memory = general world knowledge that is confounded through episodic memory; helps us categorize what we know about the world. Semantic hub model created by patterson et al. (2007) suggests that we start with simple features and go more complex; not always divided up by features. When something can"t be divided up into categories, use similarities between objects to categorize. Neurons will find features (will fire) that they are specialized for. Spreading activation model - sam (collins & loftus, 1975) assumes that semantic memory is organized by semantic relatedness/distance; things that are similar will be represented close to each other. Semantic link of relatedness is meant to make interaction with world easier. Downing, jiang, shuman & kanwisher (2001) showed that there is a neural module for human bodies/body parts similar to kanwisher"s (1997) with faces/objects. Higher activity in medial temporal lobe (mt) when stimuli is moving.
