Prevalence: ater 65: 13-15%; ater 85: 45, alzhiemer"s (memory loss + diiculty learning) Alzheimer"s disease (ad: a corical demenia, not a natural consequence of aging, first described by alios alzheimer in 1907. Imaging tracers improving early detecion: no clear idenifying impairment patern. Some studies of ad may include people with some other condiion. Paients present diferent behavioural paterns at diferent imes: ideniied by the presence of amyloid plaques and neuroibrillary tangles. Mostly in hippocampus and associaion areas: stages of ad. Mild forgefulness: ex. tendency to misplace items. Word-inding diiculies: ex. trouble with familiar names, slight impairments in mental eiciency. Spaial percepion and route indings are impaired: staring with unfamiliar places and then progressing to more. Clearly impacted judgement: cannot funcion independently outside the home. Need help in hygiene, feeding, dressing, etc. May not recognize spouse, children, or self in a mirror. Clear signs of neurological dysfuncion: ex. seizures, inconinence.
