Outline lecture 21 cultural differences: intro to culture: Beware the nominal fallacy: naming something culture doesn"t explain it need to know how it has its effects and what sustains any differences (developmentally and functionally: two views on culture. Cultural determinism: cultural differences are arbitrary & self-sustaining. Ecological determinism: cultural differences represent adaptive responses to local conditions: applying these two views to male-male violence, previously seen examples of ecology influencing culture : Mean age of giving birth: example: ecological determinants of marriage systems (e. g. polygyny) Polyandry: example: kinship systems & descent reckoning, creating cultural differences in the lab. Collectivistic and individualistic thinking created by altering socio-economic conditions. If we have time, we"ll get to: cultural phylogenies: tracking the rise & fall of matrilineal kinship systems. Matrilineal descent is associated with the absence of transmittable resources (e. g. cattle) Showing causal links by using phylogenetic trees to reconstruct cultural lineages. If we still have time, we"ll get to: scarification.
