Generally recognised as most successful example of primary prevention of disease. Vaccination of susceptible individuals: top strategy at the population level next to clean water and sanitation. If you are not vaccinated, you are vulnerable and at risk: more important is when you have high uptake of a particular vaccine, the disease cannot take over because they are protected (herd or community immunity) 90%-95% Protection of community as a whole (high uptake) People without a fully-working immune system, including those without a working spleen: public health efforts for herd immunity. People on chemotherapy treatment whose immune system is weakened. Newborn babies who are too young to be vaccinated. Many of those who are very ill in hospital. At the population level; rare case that it doesn"t work for you because it doesn"t matter. If the vaccine had not been administered, a lot more people would have been affected, trade off position: risks of vaccine outweight everything else.
