Explains the fact that organisms are adapted to their environment. Compeiion is what shapes the diferences in traits into those that persist. Fitness: describes how good a paricular genotype is at leaving ofspring in the next generaion relaive to how good other genotypes are at it. Puzzles: some phenomena in nature are puzzling given natural selecion"s power. Solved by sexual selecion: if females are choosy and males compete for access to females, then there will be sexual selecion for males willing to go to great lengths to be chosen. There are 2 sides to the evoluionary coin: survival, reproducion. Animals that help other con-speciic animals at a cost to themselves. The animals act so as to maximize group itness, not individual itness. That seems to be what eusocial insects are doing: sterile castes of workers devoted to the reproducive success of a queen: hamilton argues. Instead of looking from individuals to groups, you look from individuals to genes.
