The paradox of sex: two forms of reproducion. Two individuals fuse their genomes to create a new individual. If itness = # potenial copies of genes in next generaion . A sexual reproducer has to work twice as hard , since it only transmits half its geneic material: the cost of sex . Note: an organism that has to work twice as hard at anything (to say nothing of reproducion) is at a huge disadvantage relaive to another: imagine two compeing populaions, one that reproduces sexually, one asexually. A sexual reproducer has to ind a mate. If itness = # potenial copies of genes in next generaion : flowering plants have a hard ime geing dates and so do some homo sapiens males . Males because there is a higher cost in females (promiscuous males, choosey females) Sexual reproducion is costly, but is widespread among mulicellular organisms. May not do so (relaionship of phenotype to genotype)
