Many species can reproduce asexually (plants, animals, bacteria) There are costs to sexual reproduction: two fold cost of sex: only pass on half of your dna; clones reproduce your genes 2x as fast, mate search and competition, stds. Not everyone agrees who is more attractive between brad pitt and ryan gosling: but can agree they are both more attractive than donald trump. Direct benefits: increase the chooser"s survival or child-rearing potential. Direct influence on chooser"s fecundity: fertility/virility, marital benefits (food, resources), parental effort, protection from predators or harassment, reduced risk of contracting parasites. Indirect benefits: increase the viability of the chooser"s offspring. Benefits next generation and/or allows the chooser to have better offspring: good genes (for offspring survival and attractiveness), low mutation load, compatible genes (ex. complementary immune system) We can"t directly know how fertile one is we have to infer it. Use a perceived trait to estimate actual traits that have reproductive benefits.
