PSYC 2650 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Bean Bag, Time Point, Forgetting Curve
Document Summary
Learning how to learn: insights from studies of human memory. Retrieval: recalling the information in the future. Switching up the context in which you are learning. Ex: switching between different courses when studying. Ebbinghaus" repetition research repeated a string of consonants and measured how long it took until his retrieval was perfect. He measured different lengths of consonants and the number of repetitions, and found that the number of repetitions affected the time necessary to relearn after 24h (retention), specifically more repetitions = less time needed to relearn. Massed: cramming, boosts short term recall but has a decreased long term retention. Distributed: small bits over a long period of time (spacing), boosted long term retention. Study: two groups (spacers and massers) were tested on math problems, the spacers studied 2 problems in 2 sessions, and the massers studied all 4 in one session . the spacers performed better on the test.
