Unit 8: chapter 9- concepts and generic knowledge. Concepts are like shoe or house or tree. Concepts are the building blocks for all our knowledge. The understanding of these basic concepts are truly crucial to living. Understanding a concept is analogous to knowing a dictionary definition, this is a simple hypothesis of concepts. The notion that members of a category (e. g. , all dogs, all games) resemble one another. In general, family resemblance relies on some number of features being shared by any group of category members, even though these features may not be shared by all members of the category. Therefore, the basis for family resemblance may shift from one subset of the category to another. Family resemblance is a matter of degree, not all or none. One way to think about definitions is that they set the boundaries for a category.
