Document Summary

Genotype: determined by the genes a person inherits. Phenotype: the outward expression of the genotype, consists of a person"s observable or measureable characteristics. Father"s sperm + mother"s ovum = zygote 46 chromosomes total, 23 from each parent. Monozygotic (identical): a zygote that divides to form two genetically identical individuals. Dizygotic (fraternal): occurs when two ova are released simultaneously and both are fertilized by different sperm. 1 in 125 births (higher with fertility drugs) Direct production of amino acids necessary for forming new cells. Guide cells to develop different parts of body. May turn on or turn off other genes. One member from mother, one from father. Homozygous alleles: both are dominant or both are recessive. Heterozygous alleles: one is dominant and one is recessive. Co-dominant alleles: they are each heterozygous and equal. Males more likely to show x-linked recessive traits eg. Polygenetic inheritance: trait influences by multiple genes e. g. height, skin colour, temperament.
