Gender typing: the process by which kids get not only a gender idenity, but the moives, values and behaviours considered appropriate in their culture for members of their sex. A value, moive or behaviour that is considered more appropriate for members of one sex than the other. A society"s gender role standards relect how people of certain genders are supposed to behave and their stereotypes (textbook) Normally prescribe girls to be more nurturing, to be in more caring roles. We emphasize cooperaion and social sensiivity to others" feelings more in girls than in boys (lecture) More emphasis on relaional characterisics when communicaing to females, more agency and autonomy references emphasized when communicaing to boys (lecture) Expressive role: social prescripion oten directed to females. One should be cooperaive, kind, nurturing and sensiive to other"s needs.
