PSYC 2390 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Agnosia, Retina, Myelin
Document Summary
Processes involved in perception: environmental stimulus (buildings, birds chirping, smells in the air) Principle of transformation: stimuli and responses created by stimuli are transformed, or changed, between the environmental stimulus and perception. Principle of representation: everything a person perceives is based not on direct contact with stimuli but on representations of them that are formed on the receptors: receptor processes. Sensory receptors: cells specialized to respond to environmental energy (each sensory system"s receptors are specialized to respond to a specific type of energy) When the visual receptors that line the back of the eye receive the light reflected from the object they transform environmental energy into electrical energy. Transduction: the transformation of environmental energy into electrical energy. Recognition doesn"t always follow perception sometimes they can happen at the same time or in reverse order: action involves motor activities (ex. walking toward object, picking it up, etc. )
