Designed to describe and measure the behaviour of people and animals as it occurs in their everyday lives. Focus on muliple behaviours in a paricular seing. Focus on qualitaive descripion and interpretaion: ex. Observed and recorded behaviour of chimps in africa for many years. One of irst to record tool use in non-humans. Advantages: useful for providing insight into real-world behaviour, can examine behaviours that cannot be manipulated by researcher. Descripive records of one or more individual"s experiences and behaviours: oten in-depth analysis of a single case, piaget: stage theory of cogniive development. Case is interesing because it is unusual: sigmund freud, brain damage: phineas gage. Focus on speciic behaviours in a narrow context. Coding system developed to measure behaviours: ex. Observed whether males and females made complete stops while driving at night. Focuses on speciic behaviours that are related to events previously decided by the researchers: individual sampling.
