In one study, 252 adults completed a survey about their tv viewing habits, including the frequency with which they watched reality-based tv. Regular reality tv viewers indicated that they did gain pleasure from reality tv shows because such series present opportunities to observe others who are worse off than themselves: feather, n. t. , wenzel, m. , & mckee, i. r. (2013). Integrating multiple perspectives on schadenfreude: the role of deservingness and emotions. Motivation and emotion, 37, 574-585: this study tested the impact of perceived deservingness of misfortune and social identity on feelings of schadenfreude. One depicted a college student, either from the same or a different institution, who had experienced academic success for either deserving or undeserving reasons. In the second scenario, participants learned that the school had rejected the student"s application for admission to a prestigious honors program. This reduces the estimate of error variance in statistical tests.
