A group exists when two or more people define themselves as members of it and when its existence is recognized by at least one other (brown, 2000; p. 3) If people don"t define themselves of members of a group, then they are not a group. Example; people standing at a bus stop: not a group. Common goal (everyone here to get a credit) Social structure (i am a student, there is a professor Face to face interaction (see these students everyday) There is nothing more to a group than the people who comprise it. There is something more to a group than just the people who comprise it. Norms are ways of specifying what are acceptable (or unacceptable) attitudes and behaviours of groups members. Example of general norm: american man, heterosexual, married, children married, children. Likes to dress like a woman (dresses) House was vandalized, harassment, and almost lost his job.
