PSYC 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Motion Perception, Parallel Computing, Subjective Constancy
Document Summary
The senses do not deceive, it s the judgment that deceives . Dual processing: principle that information is simultaneously processed on separate conscious and sub-conscious tracks. Perception: the process of organizing and interpreting sensory info, enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events. Conscious high track : take deliberate actions based on what we recognize in our environment (eg. i saw a bird!) Unconscious low track: perform automatic actions (often without being aware of them) based on the cues that our sensory organs capture (eg. see color, motion, form, and depth) Parallel processing: building perceptions out of sensory details processed in different areas of the brain. Selective attention: what we focus on is what we notice. Selective inattention: our failure to notice part of our environment when our attention is directed elsewhere. As soon as you place your attention on something, you miss other elements going on. Even if you feel you"ve seen it all, you haven"t.
