PSYC 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Wilhelm Wundt, Edward B. Titchener, Behaviorism
Document Summary
What is psychology: about understanding the causes of mental processes and behaviour by using a scienti c approach, as william james referred to the nasty little subject , it is di cult to study, simple explanations are far and few. Carefully measured observations that relied on introspection. Titchener also relied on self-report data and introspection he has people report on sensations and other elements of experience in a reaction to stimuli. Titchener tried to use these introspective reports to build a model of the minds structure. He called this view structuralism: william james wrote principles of psychology, opposed the structuralism focus of introspection and search for smaller elements, he developed functionalism, focuses on the outcome of mental processes and behaviour. Why do we need a scienti c approach: our intuition is coloured by a multitude of cognitive biases. Hindsight bias ( i knew it all along! )
