Extremes in mood that disrupt normal life experiences: Prolonged periods of sadness, feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, social with drawl, and cognitive and physical sluggishness: frequency, intensity, and duration of symptoms is out of proportion to the situation. Major depressive disorder: five (or more) of the following symptoms have been present during the same 2 week period and represent a change from previous functioning; at least one of the symptoms is either 1. Extreme highs and lows in mood, motivation and energy. Manic state: euphoric mood, grandiose cognitions, rapid speech, lack of need for sleep. In major depression concordance rate higher for identical twins than fraternal twins (67% vs 15% concordance: 50% of people with bipolar disorder have a close relative diagnosed. Help clients discover and change cognitions that underlie problems the way you interpret a situation affects your emotions and behaviours cognitive therapy for depression. Goal is to reprogram automatic thought patterns so not self- defeating and self- fulfilling.
