Knowledge generation and mobilization in psychology (part 1) A structured process of trying to understand the causes of mental processes and behaviour using a scientific approach. All structured and all a scientific approach. Goal of the entire study of psychology is to the causes of mental processes and behaviour. Case study: observing and gathering information to compile an in-depth study of one individual. Naturalistic observation: recording behaviour in the environment without control or manipulation: watching children from behind a two-way mirror, having a secret observer in a bar watching a subject drink. Survey: a method of gathering information about many people"s thought or behaviour through self-report: eg: telephone survey on the attitude of the people working to make politicians. Purpose: to observe the association between two variables (the extent to which they co- occur) 17 sept 2015: eg: depression is associated with low self esteem, but we need to figure out which one leads to which.
