POPM 4230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Uterine Horns, Parvovirus, Gilt-Edged Securities
Document Summary
Number of sows that farrow / #sows bred. Did not reach term, died before birth, started to decompose. Ubiquitous virus (dna), endemic infection in most herds. Increase in number of sows returning to estrus post-breeding. If it is very early in the gestation then the sow lose the pregnancy and the come back to heat. If later, then low number of piglets born alive, increased mummified piglets. Decrease in number of piglets born alive. Some affected litters only have 2-3 live / litter. Any retained piglet can decompose and rot and cause infection but mummified piglets decomposing in placenta and they cannot cause uterine infection. Virus crosses placenta and travels from fetus to fetus along the uterine horn. Gets to one fetus, kills it, and then move through placentation other fetus. Early in pregnancy = resolve whole pregnancy. Under 70 days = increased mummified fetuses.
