Agent: bacterial pathogens in sufficient numbers. Environment: teat hygiene, cleanliness of stalls, alleys. Prevention is based on understanding how disease happens. Disease only occurs if sufficient causal factors are present. Changes in milk and udder: severe. Subclinical mastitis: absence of other diseases, teat end health, cows, heat stress, humidity, visibly normal milk but measurable infection or inflammation (elevated scc) Many mastitis-causing organisms are common on the cow and in her environment.
