POLS 3670 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Basic Income, World Bank, Mexican Social Security Institute
Document Summary
Central component of our definition of politics (who gets one, when, how) Extraction from the poor, distribution to the wealthy. Extraction from wealthier sectors of society, distribution to poorer ones. Welfare state: responsibility of states to securing a modicum/bit of welfare to its citizens. European countries adopt similar programs, early 20th century. Adoption of redistributive policies in some countries of the global south, 1950s and 1960s. 4 pillars to a welfare state (things ppl don"t think about): Health care (sometimes free, sometimes restricted to certain collectives) Social security and pensions, funded in part by payments made by workers. Social services, including all the different types of aid destined to cover the needs of certain groups. Not all countries have all 4, most have some but not always all. Social-democratic: based on the principle of universalism and reducing ppl"s reliance on the market to survive; ppl"s lives should not be reliant on markets.
