Rise of japan and the collapse of the qing and choson. China fell to warlords, so 1916-1927 is the period of high warlordism. May fourth is called the day that confucius died because the new movement challenged his ideals. Marks the start of chinese contemporary history. During this period, many believed that china was now afloat and that all that it was working towards in reforms from the 1840s on were useless. While the warlords are in charge people begin to question everything about the way things are done in china many students and youth protest. Youth are extremely important and demanded a voice in this period, very contrary to previous confucian deals. Believed that the language of china was strangling it because it was too difficult for people to master the classical chinese. So he advocated for language reform and said it should be written as it was spoken.
