Core of the judicial process is dispute resolution. Courts are one method of resolving disputes (coercive) When a court makes a ruling its coercive: adjudicate disputes by applying the law to the facts of the dispute, accepted by both parties because court is impartial. Courts effect how we are govern how the political process takes place: role of courts, process of governing. Unlike other institutions growing more powerful (pmo, us president) . Outcomes from canadian courts: abortion (morgentaler, physician-assisted dying (carter, sex work (bedford, safe-injection sites (phs, same-sex benefits and marriage (multiple) International (example: un, nafta, wto) law between states. Relationships/ disputes between states, or people in more than one state. Domestic law (within canada) will be the focus of this class: categories of private law. Torts: wrong committed against person, property, or reputation. Contract: binding legal agreements made by mutual consent. Definition: rules for individuals, groups, corporate entities. Family law: marriage and dicorce, custody, support payments.
