Lecture 4: the liberal tradition in african politics ii. Western idea, assumes that things will get better for every state. All states will eventually look the same; more peaceful, democratic and established market economies. Africa realized very soon after independence that modernization was very difficult. Problems africa faces on the road to modernization: Political instability militaries often stepped in and dismissed the civilian governments that had previously been in place, this was done in the name of creating order and they could do it because they had guns. Nigeria had two coups in 1966, and one in each of 1975, 1983, 1985 and 1993. Ghana had one military coup in 1966, three in the 1970s (1972, 1978 and 1978/9), and one in 1981.
