Week 10: sex and gender non-conformity, politics and the state: the family and gay politics. She doesn"t see gender in terms of a binary, it"s a process that we are constantly constituting these genders. On sexuality she has a problem with how you can only ever be heterosexual or homosexual. Our biological sex and material body is not outside of culture. Liberal"s believe the family is self-help (state doesn"t have to. Germany with civil union said you could only adopt your partners biological child. Careful in demanding recognition of same sex marriage: may only get what the state desires, rule of law interprets things in certain ways. Gay marriage is an ambivalent gift: co-opted into normalcy. It"s impossible to reconcile de-legitimizing these others and legitimizing gays and lesbians. Gays and lesbians should remain critical and skeptical. France: argument against same sex marriage because it is detrimental to a child"s entrance into being human and to culture.
