POLS 2080 Lecture 12: Lecture 14_ Gender and Development
Document Summary
Because women are disproportionately affected by underdevelopment and make up 70% of the world"s poorest. Yet, we should avoid falling into the trap of seeing women as perennial victims in development. Women in the global south are not a homogenous entity! Countries with higher gender inequality tend to experience: For the most part, development has been in the hands of men. This has to do with the long-standing dominant system of society in which men held power while women were largely excluded from it. Patriarchy is a system of social structures and practices in which men dominate, oppress and exploit women. Arguably, there is a systematic bias towards patriarchal interests in politics and the economy; women are hired for their characteristics as docile, obedient workers and are paid less for equivalent work produced by men. The system institutionalized male interest because the practices of this system are a historical product of male interests.
