A migrant: someone who lives outside their homeland for atleast one year. Expat a westerner who is a migrant because of their business relations. Refugee: someone who is outside their homeland, because of a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion. This means they have already been verified by an authority as someone who has legitimate grounds to seek asylum. Displaced person: forced to leave because of conflict, persecutions and natural disasters, this can happen domestically or internationally. Asylum seeker: a displaced person seeking protection, the term before they are refugees. These people are protected by international law: united nations declaration on human rights 1949, un refugee convention 1951. People who are endangered have a legal right to asylum in all member states of the un. The biggest migration we have seen was after/around ww2. More an 60 million displaced people worldwide.
