Document Summary

Pols 2080 lecture 3 september 20th 2016. Suggests a very 2-sided world: modern, traditional. Solution is seen to be western-like industrial development everywhere. People see this as a way to make the rich richer and poor poorer: however from a modernization theorist there is no conflict between rich and poor, therefore there is a moral obligation to help them. For these guys, underdevelopment is not a condition but rather something that has been actively imposed: today"s rich countries growth has impoverished the poor, now the forces of international capitalism continue to block their ability to succeed. 1960"s: when people first began to question modernization theory. Often then shipped back and sold to underdeveloped world: this system created the conditions of economic dependency. Dependency theory is a critique of modernization theory. M theory looks at the world as developed states and the latter: modern vs traditional, sees that there is a permeable core.
