The vast majority of history have lived in rural areas: only since 2009 has it become recognized that more than half the population is living in cities. The majority of poor populations still live in rural areas. According to level of urbanization: 1. Most of the worlds poor are in these countries: china, india, indonesia, 3. What this shows is that wealth of a country does not determine the level to which they are urbanized: europe less urbanized than latin america. Low population density: people think of villages in terms of cities. Livelihoods are based on agriculture: farming or livestock and natural resources (mining, fishing) Need to avoid the image of the tradition bound peasant. The brooklyn commission coined the term in their report: development which meets todays needs without compromising tomorrows needs, this issue came out around 1987 at the time of the commission. People throughout most of history lived this sway: subsistence agriculture.
