Pols 2080 lecture 2 ---- september 15, 2016. Absolute poverty : less the 1. 25 per day. There is a huge issue with inequality. Global development project took off after ww11. 1950 us were optimistic and promised progress: jobs, mass consumerism, rise of the middle class, recovery in western europe. This progress did not extend to the developing world. People who believe in this believe that people need modern values and technologies and institutions to develop and advance. Common concept of traditional societies, then changing into modern societies. These theorists are concerned with economic growth: gdp. They feel mechanization and industrialization are necessary for this transformation: these theorists are always studying the conditions needed for economic growth. They feel traditional societies are stagnant and unchanging: that is why they disliked them, they would produce a hostile economic environment. Early modernization theory believed that there was the west and the rest : that"s why modernization theory is referring to western style development.
