(homogenized) Riding: the ability of individuals to join groups that are different from them. Canada often goes with this form of networking. Issue: nothing in common leads to barriers and discomfort with other groups. Definition: organizations which have some autonomy from government or political parties and try to influence public policy. Makes interest groups stand out from political parties. Almost all have formal structure of organization. Must be able to articulate interests in a strategic way. If not able to, there are not successful group. Try to influence power rather than exercise power. Core contrast between interest group and political party.
