July 1, 1867- formation of canada: nova scotia government agreed against the wishes of the majority population. 31 thousand nova scotians signed a petition to separate. 1868: nova scotia passed motion to secede from canada but the british. Parliament denied it: new brunswick (nb) was also opposed but convinced to ensure security. The british government claimed they were unwilling to continue to provide military protection indefinitely (raid of fenians) First settled 10 000 years ago by first nations (not indians ) who crossed from asia. 1000 years ago, inuit ancestors spread from western alaska to canadian arctic: aboriginal groups developed different cultures and languages. Developed intricate cultures and governments prior to european settlement. Britain and france fought for control over canada, results: british control of newfoundland and parts of maritimes in 1713. 1755, expelled acadians who refused to swear allegiance to british crown: 1756-1763 = global seven years war between britain and france and allies.
