Focus on the ideas behind poliics, rather than the mechanics that drive poliics: understand more than just the nature of poliics. Inescapable link between poliics in the real world and poliical theory: theorists strive to root theory in the reality of poliics. But: theory also atempts to be imeless: not only what is, but also, what ought to be. Seeks to deine the poliical condiions that will create the best society. Plato (the republic) - each part of the soul performing its funcion. Everyone has a purpose in life and strive for its desiny. Desiny for humans is to seek happiness, to live a virtues life. What does it mean to be a good ciizen: concepts: virtue, ciizenship, plato, aristotle. Medieval: life and religion (chrisianity, humans as secondary concern, religion primary, concepts: natural law, divine right, aquinas, augusine, machiavelli. Takes the thought of aristotle and synthesize it with religion (aquinas) Machiavelli marks the end of the medieval period.
