Originally the philosophy of sumkhya was promulgated by a sage, who is referred to on pg. 137. Kapila lived in the 7th century bce and none of his work survives, only as it appears in the barbamagita. Ishvara krishna, who lived in the 3rd century in the common era, both philosophies have the same name, but are very different and should not be confused. The basic theory: pg. 147,ch. 13 vs. 19. both begingingless, know also the forms and modes the basic distinction is between: purusha (the person) synonym for god, prakriti nature. Pg. 147 there are going to be three modes (guuas: reason/goodness (sattva, passion (rajuas, dullness (tamas) We have different motivations within us that pull us in different directions at different times. There are three competing parts to the self, id, ego and superego.
