Capability approach grew out of critique of 3 perspectives in economics and philosophy: mainstream economic models of development esp. welfare economics, which measures econ efficiency etc. ; and growth-led models of dev"l: resource-distribution approaches e. g. rawls" liberal-welfares model based on maximin principle. Too much focus on income and wealth: libertarian rights approaches that see liberties as prior to, and wholly separate from, social economic rights and well-being. These standard measures can only tell part of the story of people"s well-being, at best. But they confuse econ-growth, gdp, preference satisfaction, with measuring well-being; or they see only a partial dimension of. S&n say a quality of life focus is needed and that this is best measured in terms of our capabilities to achieve a life we have cause to value. Capabilities approach is a partial approach to social justice. Approach is only a partial approach to justice.
