Throughout the republic socrates uses two devices that are worth noting. Secondly he uses a method called elenchus in which he attempts to draw out existing inconsistencies within his interlocutor"s belief system. Elenchus > socrates is trying to show that each person who is trying to define justice is inconsistent with other views ex. Do good to friends and harm enemies > your enemies may be good people and they do not deserve to get hurt. Justice requires living up to (legal) obligation and honesty.
