Document Summary

In the two treatises of civil government, john locke mentions how something can become one"s property in the state of nature while simultaneously explaining the circumstances in which we can appropriate goods. To begin, there must be a reason for people to appropriate the goods around them in order for individual property to exist. For instance, with the help of locke"s frequent example of picking fruits, it applies in this case through the fact that one has picked apples with their own hands. Since that individual exerted their own force of labour through apple picking, they have the right to call those apples theirs. On the contrary, there is a limit to appropriation where a person may only take as many objects or goods as they can use reasonably to their own benefit. In my opinion, locke"s perspective on property and appropriation apply to today"s society.
