PHIL 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Chauvinism, Firefighter, Domestic Violence
Document Summary
Development and sex equality: in much of the world, women are less well-nourished than men, less healthy, less educated and more vulnerable to violence. United nations development report (1999): no country treats its women as well as its men. Cotemporary feminist ethics and political theory are diverse in premises and conclusions. Common ground: each theory is grounded in a commitment to ending he oppression, subordination, abuse and exploitation of women and girls. Until recently, most male theorists accepted biological determinism, that confined women to the family restricting their legal and political rights. Sex equality legislation aims at a sex-blind society. Even if we incorporate the important differences between the sexes - this still won"t work. Since men are on average taller and heavier than women, these rules operate to screen out most women from being able to apply for the positions. Response: the height requirements are based on equipment constraints.
