Document Summary

Breast cancer, colorectal cancer and lung cancer are the leading causes of cancer death in women; prostate cancer, lung cancer and colorectal cancer are the leading causes of death in men. Neoplasia: abnormality in cellular differentiation, maturation and control of growth; it can be considered excessive and disorganized cell or tissue growth unresponsive to normal growth control mechanisms. The result is development of a tumor or neoplasm a mass of abnormal tissue. Growth and differentiation of cells is controlled so the normal structure of a tissue is maintained. For this to be maintained, the rate of cell proliferation has to balance with the rate of differentiation (leading to cell death). If there is a discrepancy between these rates the tissue will become abnormal at the gross and histologic level. Disturbances of growth can lead to an increase or decrease in the mass of the affected tissue; many of these changes are cellular response or adaptation to injury: hyperplasia.
