Document Summary
Unit 2: changes in blood flow & body fluid balance. Oncotic pressure: pressure generated by osmosis: draws uid into vessels. Hydrostatic pressure: water pressure in uenced by heart"s pumping, elasticity & recoil of arteries/blood vessels & quantity of blood vessels, etc: pushes uid out of vessels. E ect in capillary beds/blood vessels: net gains & losses from vasculature are equal. Arteriolar end: hydrostatic (pushes uid out of vessel) > oncotic (drawing into vessels: net e ect drives uid into tissues, out of capillaries; delivers nutrients & o2, often at pores; endothelial cell junctions. Permits only small molecules through (water, salts, small organic molecules) Ultra ltrate: uids passed out of normal capillary. Larger protein molecules & cellular elements retained in capillaries. Ventricular end: hydrostatic < oncotic: net e ect: uid back into capillaries, carry away metabolic waste/byproducts from tissues (i. e. co2, not all uid returns to capillaries, mostly ultra ltrate returns. Pull of oncotic pressure of plasma proteins in capillary.
