NUTR 4010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Macrocytic Anemia, Hypochromic Anemia, Folate Deficiency
Document Summary
Most commonly used screening test for anemia (g/l) Low detects only anemia (3rd stage of fe deficiency) does not detect less serious deficiencies. Poor may be due to any type of anemia. Nutrient deficiencies cause anemia (iron, folate, b12, copper & protein) Also, can be affected by race, pregnancy, altitude, smoking. *involves mainly 1) increase removal of circulating rbc"s, 2) decrease production rbc in bone marrow. Altitude: o2 is decrease so rbc increase & hemoglobin to compensate. Pregnancy: blood volume has increased to supple to fetus, hemoglobin is diluted. Smoking: carbon monoxide replaces o2 bound to hb, affects fe bound. Hb needs are increased. (higher needs due to oxidative stress) Volume % of rbcs in blood rbc cell volume/ total blood volume. Combined with hb, most commonly used test for screening for anemia. Specificity- low as per hb (if increase in hb increase in rbcs increase in hct & vice versa)
