Document Summary
Why is obesity concerning: obesity increases risk of many diseases, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, reproductive problems. Energy balance equation: energy balance occurs when: Energy out is (cid:373)ore co(cid:373)ple(cid:454) : basal metabolic rate (bmr, energy expenditure with exercise, thermic effect of food. Basal metabolic rate: 60-75% of our energy expenditure, energy needed to maintain our body"s resting functions, breathing, keep heart beating, maintaining body temperature, making or repairing cells, removing waste products, making nerve signals. Lean body mass (muscle: gender, growth (children, pregnancy, body size (tall people use more energy, age (bmr decreases with age, thyroid hormone levels. Effect of exercise: you burn more energy when, you do more intense exercise, you exercise for longer, you are healthier. Thermic effect of food: the energy needed to digest, absorb, transport and metabolize food, 5-10% of our energy intake is used to metabolize food. Fat takes less energy to metabolize than carbohydrates and protein.
