Southern soul: a harder-edged brand of black pop. Sweet soul tends to be more restrained (drifters under the boardwalk and ben e. kings. Southern soul incorporates enthusiastic emotional expression, often associated with gospel music. Larger record companies often licensed recordings from smaller labels, pressing new copies or simply distributing a record for smaller companies which benefitted both companies. Relieved the smaller company of the financial commitment. Larger companies benefitted by sharing in the profits or records. Atlantic and stax formed a very successful partnership through this type of agreement. One of the most important stax artist during the 1960s was otis redding. Signed by atlantic in 1964 as a solo act. After unsuccessful attempts he was taken to the stax studios. In the midnight hour became a number one hit on the rhythm and blues charts and number 23 on the pop charts.
