Monday september 17 t h lecture 5: wednesday arboretum: meet at sign near soccer fields (grey signs) Sometimes the fungal fossils are not very specific but some fungi produce fruiting body. Symptoms can be prese rved when a plant is fossilized: ancient oceans: earliest evidence for fossils of microorganisms. First evidence: structures that look like the glomeromycota arbuscules (which are features that are involved when they are interacting with the plants: may have provided a critical benefit to land plants that allowed them to colonize soil. Cross walls are present which indicates that the organism is a true fungi: carboniferous forest: Land plants started to diversify and form into early forests that are associated with swampy areas and coal deposits a lot of the coal we have comes from this period. This is useful as when people are doing coal mining we see a lot of fossils.
