Document Summary

Note: antigens are proteins found on the surface of pathogens unique to it. Removing a protein antigen by using an antibody that binds specifically to that target protein: complex not possible if 1)antigen is in excess. Constant & variable regions: some regions have same aa (ch for heavy chains & cl for light chains) while others have different aa (vh & vl) The variable region forms the antigen-binding site: proteases /pepsin separates the two antigen-binding sites or can separate both from the fc region (binds to surface of macrophage cells) Adv of antibody fragments: 1- don"t necessarily need specific binding for fc. There are different types of heavy & light chains which also differ in their own constant region: 5 types of heavy chains: Mu: 2 types of light chains: There are 5 classes of antibodies defined by their heavy chain: 1/ isotypes: shared by all members of a particular species- = antibody classes.
