If we speak standard english make reference to the kind of english used in the newspapers or textbooks - is the variety of english that second language learners would be taught. Some varieties include - standard canadian english, standard. Accents; appears as though other speakers have accents but in fact everyone has one. Describes the pronunciation feature that identify speakers" background, both geographically and socially. Dialect: differences in pronunciation and features (i. e. syntax and vocabulary) Speakers of different varieties of english can understand each other and so we can say they speak different dialects of the same language. Linguists use the term "varieties" instead of "dialect" which has some negative connotations. If people speak varieties that are not mutually unintelligible, they are considered different languages. Mandarin and cantonese - dialects in china but are mutually unintelligible, except in writing. Norwegian, swedish and danish are considered different languages, but they are mutually intelligible.
