Groups: decision-making is a key activity that teams must do, no matter what their governance structure, most groups could/should be a lot better at decision-making. Goal of this class: to enable you to help your future groups make better decisions and be a team player. Trade-offs individuals vs. group: the potential of groups is higher than the potential of the average individual, group potential is often not realized or ful lled, groups can end up making worse decisions than the average individual. Simple tasks: if there is an objectively veri able answer, a group is likely to outperform the average individual because two heads are better than one , if expert ideas are accepted, group can perform as well as best individual. Process losses: social loa ng/diffusion of responsibility, dysfunctional con ict, lack of coordination, dysfunctional norms, pressures toward conformity; groupthink. Norms: the acceptable standards of behaviour within a group that are shared by group members.
