HK 3401 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Ventral Root Of Spinal Nerve, Pia Mater, Dura Mater
Document Summary
The spinal cord has grey and white matter. The grey matter is where the nerve cell bodies lie, while the white matters the interconnecting finer tract system. It is contained in what is called the subarachnoid space: pia mater: the brain and spinal cord are intimately covered on their outer surface by this innermost meningeal layer. Spinal cord: the major reflex centre and conduction pathway between the body and the brain, a cylindrical structure that is slightly flattened anteriorly and posteriorly. Protected by the vertebrae and their associated ligaments and muscles, the spinal meninges and the csf. 31 pairs of spinal nerves are attached to the spinal cord. Multiple rootlets attach to the spinal cord and converge to form posterior and anterior roots of the spinal nerves. The anterior roots of spinal nerves contains efferent (motor) fibres to skeletal muscle and many contain presynaptic autonomic fibres.
